James initially hired me to provide feedback and suggestions on how to improve her course and make it a more engaging learning experience. The draft version of Damn Fine Words had amazing content and ideas based on James’ experience writing for the web but it was not structured as a course.
I worked alongside James as Instructional Designer, offering ideas for content, course structure, design as well as the development of engaging activities specific to James and her course.
The first round of students are currently completing Damn Fine Words. All the students are impressed by the depth of knowledge, teaching, engaging activities and personal attention that they are receiving.
I had been working for some time on a course – it was my first, it meant a lot to me, and I wanted to make sure it was value-packed. There are too many half-assed courses out there today. I also wanted this course to be a big success, one that people would get excited about. My lessons were good…but they needed something more. I wanted feedback from someone who was honest and neutral but also knew what they were talking about. Ali is a creator of two online courses. The first was an email course and the second one was a membership site. I provided Ali with a Course Critique and a Member Engagement Report that gave advice and ideas on how she could instruct, engage and offer feedback during her courses.
When I sent my ecourse off to Ainslie, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I felt pretty happy with my work — I knew the content was solid — but I was having doubts about how best to order some of the material. I didn’t know how much Ainslie would be able to help me.To my delight, Ainslie not only showed me a far better order for what I already had, she made tons of specific suggestions for simple but high-impact additions. She gave me fantastic ways to increase engagement by using Twitter, which I’d not even thought about, and she also helped me understand the importance of orienting people — for instance, providing a course overview at the start, and making sure that all my lessons had introductions and conclusions.Ainslie gave me three full pages packed with detailed advice, and even let me take a look at some of her own course materials so that I could see examples of what she was suggesting. Her help made me much more confident about finishing writing my ecourse, and – more importantly – I know that the changes she suggested are going to make the course a fantastic experience for the people taking it.
